Meander movie ending explained4/19/2023 We’ve been waiting many years for a sequel to Michael Dougherty‘s Halloween horror anthology Trick ‘r Treat, which has only become more and more popular as the years go on, and it looks like we’re closer to that finally happening. Meander releases in limited theaters and on VOD platforms July 9, 2021. Those moments and the lead performance sustain the entire viewing experience, making for stylish, fun horror that becomes too restricted by its surface-level storytelling in the end. It’s well-crafted on a visual and aural level, and it brings thrilling moments of claustrophobic dread and pain-fueled horror. Turi’s latest stretches a simple concept out to a feature-length with mixed results. She handles the horror well, too, contributing to more than one cringe-worthy moment. Weiss toggles quickly between melancholic vulnerability and feral fighter. She brings Lisa’s emotional arc to the surface while selling the hell out of her physical endurance test. Weiss more than capably carries the movie. That also means that Lisa’s more internal arc makes for a lackluster ending, especially compared to everything she previously endured. It’s effective as an experience but less so as a narrative whole. Instead, Turi seems more interested in using Lisa’s journey as a loose allegory for grief. Logic quickly collapses under scrutiny, and details that should seem important don’t matter much at all by the end. Turi doesn’t bother to fill in any blanks or handhold when it comes to answers or explanations. However, the true star belongs to the sound design, which gives a visceral, tangible quality to everything Lisa encounters. The filmmaker also brings the pain, putting his character the wringer. Turi injects some nightmarish imagery, both in the form of an antagonist and an aid to Lisa’s quest. It makes creative and innovative use of minimal space. The production design goes far in making the tunnel system feel more expansive, and it doubles as the only worldbuilding offered. When it counts down, bad things happen, prompting Lisa to think fast or suffer dire consequences. Lisa spends much of the early sequences learning the dangers of the tunnels and how it correlates to her timer. Much of that tension comes from the emphasis on time. Writer/Director Mathieu Turi finds innovative ways to create tension in a threadbare story that spends almost all of its runtime with a single character. Meander is almost entirely a one-woman show, with Lisa bellycrawling along the compact confines of the tunnel. The moment she finds her way out of the box, the true challenge begins Lisa must navigate her way through a tunnel system designed to kill her at every turn. When she comes to, she’s no longer on the road but trapped in a high-tech box with a timer strapped to her wrist. He slams on the brakes, and Lisa’s head collides with the dashboard. Then the radio announces news of a murder suspect at large, with a description that matches Adam. Alarm bells should trigger, but Lisa’s preoccupied with guilt and sorrow over the loss of her daughter. Lisa ( Gaia Weiss ) lies in the middle of the road, alone, until a driver, Adam ( Peter Franzen ), passes by and offers her a ride. It’s a bit too simple narratively, but it succeeds as experiential horror that brings intense, claustrophobic suspense. But Meander takes an even more straightforward approach, following one protagonist on her harrowing fight for survival. Both center on characters that awake in a bizarre sci-fi environment rigged with deadly traps, unaware of how they got there. The imagery and setup for Meander invoke instant comparisons to Vincenzo Natali’s Cube. Motorsport manager android apk4/19/2023 Motorsport Manager is available from the Google Play Store. Map print to scale4/19/2023 Then just print the map one room at a time. Our first option was to redesign the map so that each room fit on one sheet of paper. We explored three different options: Option 1: Redesign the Map as Small Rooms If your map is bigger than a standard sheet of paper (8.5 x 11 inches in the US), then you’ll need to get creative. That means that each square is typically 1" x 1". In our view, a desireable feature of printing maps is getting the scale right so that you can use your minis on the map. We opened the map in Preview, then we went to Tools > Adjust Size and filled it in as follows: We have 22 grid squares, so our image is 22 inches by 20 inches. On a Mac, this can easily be done with the built-in Preview app. Then count the number of grid squares on the horizontal dimension. Find a graphics program that supports measurements in inches (not just pixels). (Some actually involved doing MATH!!!) But we found a much simpler way. While trying our hand at scaling, we read lots of blogs detailing complicated processes. ( Best Quality would give you a grid larger than 1".) If you are printing on a regular printer, you might need to scale the image down. We chose Best Quality because we were planning on printing on a commercial printer (Option 3). With that, we hit Export, repeating this export process for each level of our tower. Each layer (saved as a JPEG) was between 3M and 9M. With Best Quality, the files Dungeon Draft creates are large, but not huge. We’re super thankful that the local Minuteman print shop exchanged several emails with us to look at our images and recommend settings. By trial and error, we arrived at the Best Quality setting for printing. But we learned the hard way that the resulting preset is far too small for printing. Unsurprisingly, when using Roll20, we use the Roll20 preset. And it turned out that the print shop liked the grid because it was easy to check measurements.ĭungeon Draft has several Grid Presets options. But we wanted the grid to be on the printed version. Often times, when we play on Roll20, we turn off the grid on the map and use Roll20’s grid instead. (The default Dungeon Draft assets, in contrast, might be fine as PNG files.) We knew the resulting image size would be important if we were to email the image to a print service.ĭungeon Draft provides the option of overlaying a grid. The Forgotten Adventures assets are rich in color and texture, so JPEG works better. JPEG is a “lossy” format designed for images with lots of different colors and patterns. When it comes to the Export Mode, we chose JPEG. Export each floor as a separate file.Įxporting was the first step that required really thinking about paper layout. So once we were done creating the map, we just exported each level. Each level can then be exported as a separate file. Exporting The Map to Image Filesĭungeon Draft makes it easy to create multi-level maps. This is the first of four floors for our tower. We’ll talk about that later, exploring three options for large printing. These dimensions do not match a standard paper size, which added a little bit of a complication. The base map size is 22 grid squares by 20 grid squares. We created a four story tower in Dungeon Draft. We’re also using the Forgotten Adventures Dungeon Draft Integration. In this tutorial, we’ll use another of our favorites: Dungeon Draft. The paper on the table is a map that shows the location of the enemy.Įarlier this year, we reviewed Campaign Cartographer. In-game, these papers hold a clue to help the party reach their next milestone. For example, in our map, we placed a few pieces of paper on a table. It is fun to realize that exact layout you have in mind, and also fun to hide little things here and there for your players. A few of our favorites are Mike Schley and 2 Minute Tabletop.īut we also enjoy making maps ourselves. And we know of dozens of artists who provide cheap premium maps for download. There are many freely available maps online. Then we look at three ways to print the map (modular, sliced, and commercially printed). In this article, we talk about how we created and exported the map, and how we scaled the image (the easy way). We took an encounter map we created in Dungeon Draft and explored our printing options. So we at Loot & Liar decided to experiment. Going back to hand-drawn maps on a wet-erase grid seemed like a little bit of a let down. But after a year of playing on Roll20, we have fallen in love with those flashy battle maps. As we slowly move back to actual tabletop play, we’re finding renewed interest in the pen-and-paper parts of the game. What if I get my furniture and it’s damaged?Ī. Hammurabi code eye for an eye4/18/2023 Many jumped to the conclusion that Mosaic Law evolved from the Code of Hammurabi. Historians were surprised to find the idea of lex talionis in a code that predated Mosaic Law (the laws of Moses and the Hebrews) by a couple hundred years. Although it might be a little bizarre to our modern sentiments, this was perfectly rational and fair - at least to Hammurabi. If one put out another's eye, he or she would lose an eye. The code not only included lex talionis, but it literally dictated such laws for eyes and teeth. The discovery of the Code of Hammurabi cast doubt on this. You've probably heard of the ancient law of "an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth." For a time, people thought this idea, called lex talionis (law of retribution), originated with Moses and Hebrew law. Those in severe debt could enter indentured servitude to pay it off. Property in the form of land and houses - or even wives and children - could serve as collateral, too. What's more, the code addresses the idea of a secured loan (one backed by valuable collateral) as well. Lenders also had to finalize the contract in front of witnesses and wait for harvest time before demanding repayment. The code stipulates that a lender could charge at most 20 percent for a silver-based loan and 33.3 percent for a grain loan. Because Babylonia's economy functioned partly on metal currency and partly on barter, the laws also established certain standards and limits for loan agreements to control an abuse of usury. For instance, if a dam broke and subsequent flooding destroyed crops, the laws chalked it up to the negligence of the dam's owner, who had to compensate the farmers who lost crops. Ībout 100 of these laws concern matters of property and commerce, including debt, interest and collateral. Some historians have claimed the code paints a picture of a society even more advanced and sophisticated than the early medieval period in Europe, which began around A.D. These laws established stability and kept the society flourishing. Inspecting the Code of Hammurabi is like looking through a window into ancient Babylon, a bustling agricultural empire with urban centers. To understand why, we'll inspect some of the most important aspects of the code. It offers remarkable insights into the history of law, social justice and even the Bible. When Scheil found the stela, excited scholars published numerous books and commentary about it - as well as dubbed it the "Code of Hammurabi." Historians continue to discuss the code's significance and lingering mysteries to this day. These laws illuminate the Babylonians' sense of justice, which was surprisingly ahead of its time in some ways. It enumerates almost 300 laws, all in a conditional if/then format. Between a prologue and epilogue (in which Hammurabi invokes the gods and discusses the greatness of his justice) lies the meat of the artifact. The tablet has 16 columns of text on the front and 28 on the back. Below that picture are columns of inscription in the Akkadian language. It wasn't the only one of its kind, which we learned from both the inscription and fragments of other copies that have been found in sites of other Babylonian cities.Īt the top is an engraved depiction of Hammurabi with the god of justice, Shamash. It's just more than 7 feet (2.13 meters) tall - clearly, it was meant for public display when it was first erected in an ancient Babylonian city. Today, the basalt monument stands in the Louvre Museum in Paris. Unearthed in 1901 by French archaeologist Jean-Vincent Scheil, the stela holds the most well-preserved and comprehensive lists of ancient laws in existence. AuthorWrite something about yourself.
